Memento Mori

Referencing the Dutch Baroque period (c.1585-1730) and the rich still-life Vanitas tradition, Robyn adapts the genre to today’s skate culture. “Memento Mori” translates from Latin as “remember you will die” and contemplates the impermanence of life. The combination of symbolic images such as skulls and flowers remind the viewer to contemplate and value the time we have in this life, and not waste it vanity and indulgence. This piece is painted on a skateboard deck and features peonies, lilium, tulips, ansomnia and chrysanthemum, along with a skull missing it’s mandible.

This piece was painted for the “Deckade” show at Sorse Gallery in Brunswick, in 2024. Curated by Fort Heart Co.
